# Infinitive
| | **Infinitive** is a linguistics term for certain verb forms existing in many languages, most often used as non-finite verbs. As with many linguistic concepts, there is not a single definition applicable to all languages. The name is derived from Late Latin [modus] infinitivus, a derivative of infinitus meaning "unlimited". |

- the basic [dictionary form](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictionary_form "Dictionary form") of a verb when used non-finitely, with or without the [particle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_particle "Grammatical particle") _to_. Thus _to go_ is an infinitive, as is _go_ in a sentence like "I must go there" (but not in "I go there", where it is a [finite verb](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finite_verb "Finite verb")). The form without _to_ is called the **bare infinitive**, and the form with _to_ is called the **full infinitive** or **to-infinitive**.
