- There might be firmware/secure boot security settings that prevent you from starting up to an external disk without enabling reduced security, but Apple will tell you how to do it.
- **Intel-based**
- Startup manager
- Hold `Opt`
- This will let you choose a startup disk
- Then you can just hit `Cmd-R` in this mode to enter macOS Recovery mode
