#form/thought/synthesis Most people understand free speech as something that is good for us, but for others, something we must tolerate, along the lines of a scarce resource or Zero-sum game, etc. However, the Value of free speech is not like the value of pleasure or many other freedoms that allow for us to pursue various satisfactions in life. Rather, the value of free speech is its ability to improve our own grasp of the truth and our understanding of reality by exposing it to others who have the full, unfettered freedom to disagree and criticize what we say. We should be extremely skeptical of our opinions and beliefs if they are not regularly exposed to people who might have reason to see things differently. Lippmann likens this to the manner in which we want our doctor's speech to be unbiased, unfettered, etc. and giving little weight to hurting our feelings or softening the blow of truth in any way, e.g. in diagnosing. Thus, this notion of the value of free speech as a noun, requires the valuing of free speech as a verb, as a civic duty, by not merely allowing others to disagree with you, but to widen and strengthen the unfettered authenticity of everyone's opinion, to make sure people feel as willing as possible to share their opinion, as free from bias and consequences as is reasonably possible. It prioritizes a much bigger and sophisticated notion of the Public sphere and civic engagement, etc. than most people tend to conceive. Infringements on others' free speech rights are thus very literally infringements on our own because its value lies in its quality which can only be obtained via others in a conducive and healthy public sphere where free speech is not only tolerated, but properly understood as a primary and mutual Collectivism value - not a simplistic, hollow, individualistic one.
